AZZEDINE ALAÏA'S DIOR COLLECTION at La Galerie Dior ph. Adrien Dirand
Azzedine Alaïa started building a significant heritage collection very early. Dior occupies a special place therein, with some 600 pieces now carefully preserved by the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation. More than a hundred of these are being unveiled for the first time at La Galerie Dior, emphasizing the designer’s admiration for Christian Dior and his successors, from Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano.
“Christian Dior’s models testify to the relentless quest that Azzedine Alaïa had unwaveringly set his heart upon. In search of the mysteries of dresses and the delicate structures that make vaporous petticoats ‘stand up’, he skillfully brought together the objects of his adolescent dreams.” Olivier Saillard, director of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation.
In parallel, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation is presenting a unique exhibition of the works of these two “masters of couture”. Azzedine Alaïa, who was hired by Dior for a few days in 1956, had fond memories of the demanding workshops on avenue Montaigne. Around thirty Christian Dior designs collected by Azzedine Alaïa, displayed alongside a similar number of his own creations, demonstrate how the influence of the inventor of the New Look was expressed in the work of the French couturier of Tunisian origin.
Curated by Olivier Saillard, in collaboration with Gaël Mamine, this dual exhibition offers a new interpretation of the history of the House of Dior through the eyes of a discerning collector, while revealing a series of captivating correspondences between Christian Dior and Azzedine Alaïa.
