La signature Chloé
Azzedine Alaïa Foundation
In this book, published by Éditions de La Martinière, Judith Clark and Géraldine-Julie Sommier explore Chloé’s unique identity through thirty iconic pieces and design codes, offering a well-researched insight into the fashion house’s stylistic heritage.
Founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, Chloé has, from its very beginnings, cultivated a vision of femininity unbound by convention. An ever-evolving identity, shaped over the decades by the successive artistic directors who have led the house. From Karl Lagerfeld to Stella McCartney, via Phoebe Philo and, today, Chemena Kamali, each has helped to reinterpret the house’s codes without altering its spirit.
The book’s richness stems as much from the diversity of the items on display and the interplay between texts, photographs and archival drawings as from the complementary perspectives of its two authors. This approach is also underpinned by the complementary perspectives of its two authors. Judith Clark, a lecturer in fashion history and museology at the London College of Fashion, contributes her expertise in history and museology, whilst Géraldine-Julie Sommier, head of the Heritage department at Chloé, shares her intimate knowledge of the house’s history. These two perspectives converge to shed light on how a creative identity is forged, passed on and reinvented over time.
Chloé’s signature is aimed as much at fashion enthusiasts as at those who wish to understand what makes a fashion house endure: that ability to evolve without ever losing sight of its essence.
With Judith Clark, Géraldine-Julie Sommier, Claude Brouet and Peter Knapp in attendance.
