Azzedine Alaia in the 21st Century
At the École des Beaux-Arts, during our sculpture course, we were taught to turn around the model. One must always turn around the model. Azzedine Alaïa
The exhibition «Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st century», organized by Mark Wilson is a follow-up to the overview of his work shown at the Groninger Museum in 1997-1998. The exhibition displays about fifty pieces, made from 2000-2011. The models are grouped by materials:velvet fur, cotton, leather, silk mousseline, knits, animal skins...
As a true sculptor of body and form, Azzedine Alaïa always turns around the model, cuts the pieces, and pins the outfits…
In this new scenography, which highlights the sublime creations of the couturier, we can discover his obsession to detail, to the cut and everything that made him famous. Jackets formed to the body, long ruffled dresses, boleros in Mongolian lamb, zippered dresses, wide belts in openwork leather and a striking black tuxedo in crocodile tail-all sewn in one piece-is one of the many highlights of the exhibition.
In Couture, what interests me most is the cut. Azzedine Alaïa
