Educative Programmes

Fashion is a cultural heritage: it is important to give young designers the opportunity to discover the work and techniques of their predecessors. Azzedine Alaïa

Olivier Saillard ph. Julien Mouffron-Gardner

The Foundation pursues an educational mission through collaborations with schools and fashion institutions and also awards grants to visionary young fashion talent. While being attentive to Azzedine Alaïa's desires in the preservation of his memory and a commitment to education, the Foundation proposes a program of support for cultural activities, conferences on the study and preservation of costume and fashion archives, as well as teaching the history of fashion.

AZZEDINE ALAÏA AWARDS AND GRANTS

The Foundation, together with the Association of Friends of Azzedine Alaïa and the Cercle des Métiers de la Mode, under the patronage of Farida Khelfa, means to foster the learning and knowledge of the techniques of cut that the founder embodied to the highest level.

The Azzedine Alaïa Foundation, according to the wishes of its founding couturier, plans to turn its attention and benevolence towards all professional schools engaged in the rigorous transmission of the methods and practices of the crafts of cut and couture.By identifying, recognizing and rewarding each year one or more students of cut from French and Tunisian schools, the Foundation also chooses to reward students whose social or geographical backgrounds have been underprivileged or disadvantaged. A grant (residency) will be granted to the most gifted of the students identified on these terms and the Foundation will contribute their building of a bright future.

The Foundation, in partnership with Orveda and under the patronage of Nicolas Vu, CEO & Co-Founder of Orveda, supports the next generation of fashion talent.

Twice a year, a jury will choose two talents based on their atypical and aspirational profiles, who will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the latest projects and missions of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and have privileged access to the archives. They will also benefit from the support of a reference tutor in collaboration with the Parsons School in Paris. The winner will be asked to create a mini-collection, inspired by the knowledge of Azzedine Alaïa's immense heritage.

 THE NETWORK CULTURE(S) DE MODE.

The Foundation supports the network "Culture(s) de Mode" in its initiatives for research and the promotion of the diffusion of knowledge with conferences on the study and preservation of costume and fashion archives.

The association “Culture(s) de Mode" was founded in 2018 with the support of the French Ministry of Culture following a report submitted to the ministry on the subject of Public and Private Collections of Fashion. Under the leadership of its President Olivier Saillard, it reunites all individuals, teachers and archivists, who have chosen the study and preservation of costume and fashion archives in France. This network, rich in over 450 members, develops, encourages and supports all initiatives for fashion research in France. The association intends ‘fashion research’ to cover a wide spectrum of all those who analyze, decipher, write about, preserve, restore and create fashion.

This network welcomes students, professors, researchers, museum curators, archivists, designers, engineers, theoricians, praticians, philosophers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, writers, journalists, and enthusiasts alike. In the same vein, the term ‘fashion’ is meant in the broader sense, encompassing clothing, accessories, textiles, appearance, and consumer practices.

AN OPEN SCHOOL

An open school for the teaching of fashion history, the Foundation aims to promote the teaching of fashion history. Still today, fashion history is not always systematically present in higher education, nor held in high regard. Olivier Saillard, author of Bouquin de la mode published by Robert Laffont Editions, plans to commit to the diffusion of the history of fashion and costume through a series of conferences that may focus on a particular theme or the study of a garment from the Foundation’s collections.

Supporting talent

Young people are the future. Azzedine Alaïa

To support the next generation of fashion talent, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation is pursuing its mission of education and backing in collaboration with Orveda and under the patronage of  Nicolas Vu, CEO & Co-Founder of Orveda.

This meaningful and heartfelt partnership is inspired by the friendship and mutual respect between Azzedine Alaïa and Sue Nabi, Co-Founder of Orveda. This project is the result of a close long term relationship which began in the 1990s, and which will now provide an opportunity for future generations to express their creativity.

It's important for young people to see how some of the great couturiers worked. Azzedine Alaïa

The 2023’s first winner is Luke Radloff, a representative of the new generation in Africa. He was born and raised in South Africa  where he lives and works. After training as a fashion designer and working in the local industry, he launched his brand, UNI FORM By Luke Radloff in 2019.By forming a community of like-minded creatives in South Africa, Luke has developed a collection of garments which seeks to build a deeper, more meaningful connection with garment and wearer.

" Being given the opportunity to explore the archive of one of history’s greatest couturiers, Azzedine Alaïa, will forever be a highlight of my career. This kind of cross-cultural exchange is so important and the work that the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and Orveda are doing to further this conversation is commendable and faithful to the missions of the Foundation. I am so excited to interpret the Foundation archives through my own perspective that I call ‘emotional tailoring’ which feels authentic, given Azzedine Alaïa’s sharp and moving body of work. " Luke Radloff

Luke Radloff will be supported in his research by two tutors: Marco Pecorari, Director of the Parsons School, Paris and Antoine Buchet, assistant professor at the Parsons School, Paris. The mini-collection that Luke will create, financed by Orveda, will be exhibited  at the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation in January 2024 during the Couture Week and will carry his UNI FORM label.

ARCHIVING FASHION

I have to archive everything, all the big ones who have left their mark and who play a big role in the history of fashion. I will also have every single one of my own collections, in several variations. Azzedine Alaïa

azzedine alaïa © azzedine alaïa foundation

Conserving and preserving the collections, treasures of patience and passion that Azzedine Alaïa built over almost five decades, is the first and fundamental mission of the Foundation that Azzedine Alaïa adamantly calls for.

" When Azzedine founded the Azzedine Alaïa Association in 2007, he wanted it to become a foundation of public interest. He wanted these treasures bringing together sixty years of his work and his vast collection of art, design and fashion pieces he had collected since 1968 to be displayed to the public and studied by young designers and fashion designers. He wanted to share his knowledge with future generations."

"Under the leadership of Olivier Saillard, the future of the Foundation will meet the most ambitious objectives, with exhibitions, conferences, courses, and Alaïa scholarships. Archiving this huge collection is the first step and a crucial part of the process to make Azzedine’s dream come true."

THE MODULE OF THE MASTERS PROGRAM

The Foundation's Partneship with Parsons School

Since 2019, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and the Parsons Paris school of art and design, have come together to create a research partnership focusing on the incredible collection constituted by Azzedine Alaïa. This collaboration aims to publicize one of the greatest collections of historical Haute Couture fashion in the world, whilst simultaneously presenting to students the principles and the ideologies particular to the archiving of fashion.

Affiliated to the Parsons School of Design in New York, the Masters Degree program in Fashion Studies at the Parson Paris school is the first program in this particular domain to become available in France, and one of very few available in the world. In this program, fashion is examined as a cultural phenomenon involving all practices linked to the production, the diffusion, the representation, and the consumption of garments. The Fashion Studies program focuses notably on questions of mondialisation, sustainable development, heritage conservation, identity and day-to-day consumption of garments, technological innovation, the future of digital fashion, etc. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between theory and practice and students cover all of these subjects with seminaries, conferences and master-classes led by professors and professionals in fashion.

The module of the Masters program on which the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and the Parson’s school collaborate looks at archiving practices and the Couture pieces of the private collection gathered by the couturier. This collection rich in over 8000 exceptional historical pieces by Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, Madame Grès or Madeleine Vionnet for example, but also by more avant-garde designers of the late 20th century (Martin Margiela, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto) is in the process of being inventoried.

"This is a unique opportunity for students in Fashion Studies at Parsons School of Design. The archive of Monsieur Alaïa is one of the most extensive and unique archives in the history of fashion. It is not only a history of couture but also a crucial testimony to the ways in which Azzedine Alaïa collected other designers and couturiers. Archives of fashion are not only assemblages of garments but they are an opportunity to rethink fashion and the ways in which it remains." Marco Pecorari, Program Director MA Fashion Studies, The New School Parsons Paris.

2024 ALAÏA and SCHIAPARELLI

Unmaking Fashion Heritage

under the direction of Marco Pecorari and Antoine Bucher

Alaïa and Schiaparelli: Unmaking Fashion Heritage ph. Romain Darnaud

The MA in Fashion Studies continues its collaboration with the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation on the exploration of heritage and fashion with a project on the couturier and artist Elsa Schiaparelli. During the last two years, students had the unique opportunity to work in collaboration with the Foundation and explore the pieces collected of Elsa Schiaparelli by Azzedine Alaïa. They specifically focused on two crucial events: the auction Elsa Schiaparelli : Garde-robe de 1935 1950* in 2009 by Cornette de Saint Cyr that took place at Drouot; and the exhibition 'Schiaparelli' curated by Azzedine Alaia his Gallery on the occasion of this auction.

These two events were the starting point for the students' research within the course Fashion, Memory and the Politics of Heritage, taught by Antoine Bucher. They questioned ways in which the field of heritage studies Can make us rethink the meaning of fashion heritage and investigated how Elsa Schiaparelli has been historicized by designers, curators, academics, private collectors and cultural institutions.

Alaïa and Schiaparelli: Unmaking Fashion Heritage ph. Romain Darnaud

The installation shows a part of this research process, displaying a video and some key documents from the Azzedine Alaïa Collection with a specific focus on the unique examples of press releases by Elsa Schiaparelli collected by Azzedine Alaïa. These overlooked documents are shown to stress the importance of press releases in creating and controlling a discourse about fashion and media. In the case of Schiaparelli, these documents present a unique narrative that concurs today to a more artistic way of thinking about fashion heritage beyond garment.

2021 « ARCHIVER LA MODE » PAUL POIRET

under the direction of Marco Pecorari

A friend of mine, Françoise Auguet organised the sale of clothes from the Poiret collection. The family wanted to sell everything, everything that Madame Poiret had worn and that had enchanted all of Paris. It broke my heart. I admired her husband a lot.

The students of the Parsons Paris school were asked to work on the subject of the economical and cultural value of fashion, which has evolved greatly over the course of the last thirty years. Fashion has begun to be more and more frequently exhibited in museums. Important auction houses have opened departments specifically dedicated to fashion and regularly organize auctions of clothing, accessories and fashion photographs. Couture houses have become aware of the importance of preserving their archives, and they organize more and more events and activities centered around their own heritage, and private foundations and museums dedicated to designers of fashion are emerging.

Azzedine Alaïa was a visionary in that he became aware very early of this heritage value : from the creation of his house, he scrupulously preserved everything that was produced in his atelier and began in 1968 his collection of historical fashion.

I offered my place to this friend as a base to choose the clothes, clean them and exhibit them. I suggested inviting photographers to make sure there'd be some trace of it. In the end, the exhibition did take place. We discovered pieces of unimaginable quality, and there was even a catalogue. It was fantastic.

To examine this subject, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation provided the students of the Master’s program with an excellent case study, that of one of the most important auctions in the world: “La creation en liberté. Univers de Denise et Paul Poiret” organized by the auction house Piasa Paris in May of 2005, with the support of Monsieur Alaïa who presented at 18 rue de la Verrerie a large exhibition of the Poiret collection. This auction constitutes a landmark in the history of auctions of fashion.

The students of the Master’s program worked on the historic impact of this auction for museums and collectors, whilst having the opportunity to study pieces from the auction, purchased by Azzedine Alaïa and which are now in the care of the Foundation.

The results of their research are to be rendered in December 2020, with the publication of a book.

2019 “ARCHIVING FASHION” CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA

in collaboration with the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, curators Jessica Glasscock and Marco Pecorari

I started collecting in 1968 when Balenciaga closed his house. I was already at Bellechasse. One  of the dresses was from the 1955 runway show. There were the tags with the names of the models. All of a sudden I had this shock about haute couture. I said : It's sad that the house closes, and everything disappears. So I began to collect.

Under the direction of Jessica Glasscock, associate researcher at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the students discovered in the first semester the cataloguing practices before reflecting on possible innovations for the indexation of museum archives. Concentrating on the works of Cristobal Balenciaga carefully gathered by Azzedine Alaïa, the students also explored means of documentation through textual, visual, and oral recordings.

balenciaga ph. DR

Over a period of three weeks, from July 1st to July 18th 2019, the students had the unique opportunity to work on one of the greatest collections of fashion, in the archives of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation. The course explored the historical collections assembled by Azzedine Alaïa over the course of his life, with a particular focus on one part of his Balenciaga collection.

During the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week 2019, the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and the Parsons Paris school held the first conference of their educational program “Archiving Fashion” and presented their first summer course for Master’s students in the courtyard of 18 rue de la Verrerie, on the theme “Archiving Fashion”.

This event open to the public presented the results of the work of the students and initiated exchanges on the practice of archiving historical fashion heritage with the participation of specialists: Marie-Andrée Jouve (author and fashion historian), Olivier Saillard (fashion historian, Azzedine Alaïa Foundation board member), et Jessica Glasscock (Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of New York).

"I feel tremendously lucky to have access to the Alaïa archive and, through it, a chance to investigate a true 20th century master designer through the works he collected. Most of all, I am excited to connect students with Monsieur Alaïa’s lifetime of collecting. I have been working in museums and as a fashion professor for nearly two decades, and I know what an incredible opportunity is being offered to students in this moment." A PROJECT AROUND AN ALAÏA DRESS

I don't really like advising young people because they should be busy living their era as it is, and they should keep their curiosity, freedom without older people telling them anything. Azzedine Alaïa

Publications

With Louise de Vilmorin there were many things to learn, and intellectually it was marvellous. She would pick up a book and read it to me we'd go off travelling together. Azzedine Alaïa

Azzedine Alaïa ph. Lord Snowdon, 1990

Azzedine Alaïa had a real passion for books, and he collected them in the same way that he collected works of art and the garments of the great couturiers that he admired.

Since then, a number of other books have followed, on subjects as varied as art, fashion, and photography, as well as the catalogues accompanying each exhibition in collaboration with with major publishers and his own publishing house.

I accumulate books and I don't have the time to read them. I dream of hiring someone to read to me. That would be truly the meaning of luxury, to have my own reader.

ALAÏA/KURAMATA

Lightness in creation

Alaïa/Kuramata. Lightness in creation.  Published by Damiani

« Alaïa/Kuramata, lightness in creation » illustrates the dialogue between the works of the great couturier Azzedine Alaïa and Shiro Kuramata, a pioneer of postmodern design in Japan. Shiro Kuramata’s work is replete with the ancient and fascinating history of Japanese decorative arts and the modern eagerness for Japanese simplicity and structural simplicity. More than the pieces themselves, what’s important is their stories, which are connected by the continuous thread of non-materialisation. “My strongest wish is to feel free of all gravity, of all ties,” he declared; “I want to float”. This approach runs imbues all of his work with a kind of spiritual quest.

Azzedine Alaïa was a great admirer of Shiro Kuramata, who died in 1991, and organised an exhibition of his work here in 2005. Twenty years later, and for the first time ever, the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa has decided to celebrate one of the great designers of his time by associating Kuramata’s work with a careful selection of pieces by Alaïa. Some twenty pieces of furniture and exceptional objects designed by Shiro Kuramata (1934-91) are presented in the exhibition. In parallel, almost twenty haute couture creations by Azzedine Alaïa demonstrate his poetry of form, his radical tailoring, his subtle choice of colour and his refined use of transparency.

Texts by Tadao Ando, Andrea Branzi, Anne-Marie Fèvre, Mieko Kuramata, Barbara Radice, Olivier Saillard, Ettore Sottsass and Carla Sozzani.

ALAÏA, GRÈS

Beyond fashion

Alaïa, Grès. Beyond fashion. Published by Damiani

The "Alaïa Grès, Beyond fashion" catalogue illustrates the dialogue between these two great couturiers, emblematic figures in the world of couture, who through their personal histories and the lessons we can learn from them, continue to influence contemporary fashion.
While there is no evidence that Madame Grès and Azzedine Alaïa ever crossed paths, their creations present undeniable similarities, first and foremost in their apparent simplicity that conceals a meticulous attention to cut and shape.

Texts by Olivier Saillard French fashion historian and director of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation and Anne Graire, granddaughter of Madame Grès.

AZZEDINE ALAÏA, ARTHUR ELGORT

Freedom

Azzedine Alaïa, Arthur Elgort. Freedom. published by FONDATION AZZEDINE ALAÏA and  DAMIANI, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF CARLA SOZZANI AND OLIVIER SAILLARD

Azzedine Alaïa and Arthur Elgort initiated a collaboration considered as a frontispiece for the 1980s. Neither understood the other perfectly – Alaïa was not proficient in English and Elgort did not speak French – but they clearly established a strong rapport. Playfulness, intuition, and spontaneity were at work here. Azzedine literally entered the frame of the photograph while the joyful models leapt about enthusiastically, and it is easy to imagine the photographer smiling behind the camera. Elgort and Alaïa did not have to choose between the two, and as time passed, it became clear that the young man with unbridled talent who moved so deftly from one to the other would mark a new chapter in fashion photography, demystifying couture creations to bring them within everyone’s reach. As they worked together on magazine shoots, Elgort and Alaïa shared a dislike for superfluous sets and props, which got in the way of Elgort’s photographic vision and were like needless cosmetics for Alaïa’s sculptural creations. The models captured by Elgort’s lens and dressed by Alaïa became the ambassadors for new forms of expression where two artistic approaches came together but never clashed. Linda Spierings, Frederique Van der Wal, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Stephanie Seymour were like divinities dancing on the frieze created by Alaïa and Elgort.

This book commemorates the long collaboration between Alaïa and Elgort. Many of the images produced by the duo are considered classics, emblematic of the late 20th century. This volume reproduces approximately 200 of these dynamic, playful photographs, many of which feature Alaïa himself.
